2013 Civic Life Institute
Connecting People to Public Issues

The 2013 Civic Life Institute will focus on building the skills of engaging communities in issues that affect the quality of life of West Virginians. Many individuals and organizations throughout the state are working hard to make progress on a wide range of public issues, but they struggle to find ways to get the whole community involved in discussing concerns and acting together to address them.

At the Institute, participants will learn a processes for:

  • Networking with others who building connected communities
  • Moderating community discussions of public issues
  • Moving from community dialogue to action
  • organizing community dialogue initiatives

The large and small group sessions at the Institute are progressive, with each one building on the next as we move from general, large-group discussions to smaller, in-depth discussions and practice sessions. You’ll learn about dialogue initiatives a wide range of issues important to our state, including:

  • Building West Virginia’s Economy Together
  • Addressing Mental Health Needs in West Virginia
  • Making the Most of the First Three Years: Strong Starts for WV’s Children
  • Dropout Prevention in West Virginia
  • Increasing Fitness and Nutrition in West Virginia
  • Dealing with Prescription Drug Abuse in West Virginia
  • Building Strong, Safe Neighborhoods in West Virginia
